Big Air Conditioners and Short Cycling
In order to understand the problems caused by air conditioners that are too big, you first must understand what it means to have a system that short cycles. A short cycle occurs when the air conditioner turns on for a short amount of time, blasts a bunch of cold air into a space, and tricks the thermostat into thinking that the target temperature has be reached before the home is actually cooled down. Large air conditioners are built to cool large spaces. They blast out large amounts of cold air upon start up, and when they are cooling a large room, the cool air disperses evenly without problems.
Wasting Your Money
When the space is too small, that initial blast of cold air will trigger the thermostat to shut the unit down because the cold air is not dispersing evenly. If the unit was properly sized, the cold air created by the air conditioner would disperse evenly throughout the room, and would only trigger the thermostat once all the cold air was spread out throughout the home. Your air conditioner runs most inefficiently when it first starts up, so if your air conditioner is turning on every ten minutes or so, you could spend a lot of money on unnecessary energy waste.
Compromised Comfort
Comfort is also compromised because the cold air created by large air conditioners is never properly dispersed. This will leave you with many hot rooms that never get to the desired temperature, and because you can’t get the air conditioner to run for more than ten minutes, the temperature you set on the thermostat will not be sustained for any length of time.
