As Americans, we inherently have busy lives full of things to remember on a day to day basis. Maintaining the heating and cooling system may not be a task that needs to be completed every day, but for most, checking the furnace’s filter just once a month is still too much of a task to remember. In order to make sure things continue to work properly, many homeowners will invest in fancy filters that can last for multiple months, so that they don’t have to remember to change the filter every 30 days. However, some of these homeowners are finding that despite the manufacturer’s claims that the filter should last 3 months or longer, the filter still needs changing every 30 days. Before you blame the manufacturer, take a moment to consider that the problem might not be your filter; it might be your HVAC system and the air quality in your home!
Finding the Source of Air Quality Problems
It is recommended that once you replace your filter or upgrade to a new type of filter you check it every 30 days to make sure that it is able to handle to air quality in the home. For some, 30 days comes and the filter that is made to last 3-6 months is still in good conditioner. For others, the filter already needs to be changed. The problem lies within the home’s air quality. You may have animals or other factors that are contributing to the dirty air in the home or you may just have filthy ducts. As the furnace circulates air through them, debris is picked up and caught by the filter. When this debris is excessive, it can waste a filter in 30 days or less. (more…)

Having work performed in the home can create quite a mess. From dirty floors and walls to construction dust on every surface, getting the home back to its original condition after the repairs or remodeling jobs have been completed can prove to be quite a task. Many construction companies will clean up after themselves, but nearly all of them forget about the mess they made of one very crucial system in the home: the HVAC system! All of that dust, debris, and odor will be swept up into the duct work to be transferred through the furnace and then re-circulated throughout the home. Depending on how extensive the work was, you may have a serious air quality and furnace efficiency problem leftover. You are going to need someone to clean up this system, and Four Seasons has got your back.
Cleaning Up After Construction
- Duct Cleaning: Many homeowners have never had the ducts cleaned in the home, so odds are they are not only full of construction debris but also years and years of particle build up. A professional duct cleaning from Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning is the only way to restore this part of the system back to peak performance and bring clean air back into your home. Without this service, you could be left breathing in construction dust for years to come.
- Heating and Cooling Cleaning: With all of that debris circulating through the ducts, it will have to pass through the furnace and air conditioner as well. If you aren’t using advanced filtration system to capture these particles before they dirty up the furnace, then you probably have a mess inside your system that could be causing a massive decrease in energy efficiency. Burners and heat exchangers that are coated in a layer or dust and debris cannot transfer heat as effectively and energy efficiency suffers. You will end up paying more to use the furnace every month because the system will need to burn more fuel to keep up. (more…)

Excess moisture and negative odors are two things that every homeowner wants to get out of their home as quickly as possible. It is for this reason that our bathrooms and kitchens are equipped with exhaust fans and ventilation systems. However, if we are not taking that moment to flip the switch to turn the fan on, we aren’t going to reap the benefits of these valuable fans.
Why Your Exhaust Fans are so Important!
The first step it to get used to turning on that fan with every hot shower, but if you are still noticing sweat on the walls and ceilings, there may be a problem. Many homes are equipped with fans that move very little air and therefore allow loads of moist air to remain inside the home after hot showers. This could lead to mold and mildew growth that will cause even bigger and more expensive problems.
The Tissue Test
What you need to do is test your fan. This is easy enough to do on your own with a piece of tissue paper. Simply hold a tissue up to the fan and let go. The fan should be able to hold the tissue securely to its grills. This is a good indicator of the strength of your fan. If it can hold the tissue, odds are it is strong enough. However, if there is still excess moisture in the bathroom long after the showers are done for the day, your fan may not be large enough and therefore not powerful enough to remove the needed amount of moisture from the room. Attic ventilation fans have many benefits to your home, in all seasons! The attic in your home is a living, breathing barrier from the harsh elements of the outside weather. A poorly ventilated attic is like having a home with a head cold. During the summer it is stuffy and during the winter it is wet and drippy! Both can cause major issues for your comfort and your home’s energy efficiency. Attic ventilation fans, coupled with adequate insulation, can cure your home’s head cold and prevent these problems from causing disturbances all year round!
How Poor Ventilation Affects Your Home
In the warm months of the year the attic can reach temperatures as high as 150 degrees or more when the hot summer sun is beaming directly onto your roof. That stored up heat can make your cooling costs rise significantly inside the home. The hot air trapped in the attic heats the ceiling in the floor below and with time seeps into the room and the rest of the home. This requires your home’s air conditioner to work even harder to keep up with the soaring outdoor temperatures. If you don’t have adequate insulation, the problem may be even worse, but even in attics with good insulation, poor ventilation can account for up to 35% of your total cooling cost during the hot summer months! This is a huge waste of money that can be corrected easy by installing an attic ventilation fan. In the winter months, a poorly vented attic space can result in moisture buildup, which can lead to wood deterioration, or even worse, mold spores. (more…)

The Chicagoland air quality this time of year can vary. The local weather report may indicate that the ragweed is at a moderate level or the mold count level is high. The same may be true of the air quality in your home. Mold and contaminants can affect the air in your home and your health. It may also interfere with your heating and cooling system. A germicidal light such as a Healthy Climate UVC-24V from Four Seasons can help to produce cleaner air in your home. The germicidal light produces strong rays of ultraviolet light to help reduce harmful pathogens in your home.
Do More that Just Get a Flu Shot!
As any mom knows, flu season can be an exhausting time of the year. It usually hits around the Holidays, right when you have the most going on. You can protect your family from harmful viruses like the flu by getting more than just a flu shot. Do more to protect your family by having a Four Seasons germicidal UV light installed. The UV light operates whether your heating and cooling system is running or not. It continuously destroys bacteria and viruses before the pollutants enter your duct system. You can give your family peace of mind knowing that this same technology is used in operating rooms and clinics across the U.S. Call and ask one of our friendly representatives about what you can do to protect your family’s health this winter, and get a free quote on one of our germicidal UV lights today!

As we slowly begin to accept that summer is over, we start the transition from warm weather to cold. We pack away our tank tops and shorts. We replace weather stripping and switch the thermostat over to “heat,” but what we really should be doing is changing our filter. Every year, hundreds of homeowners recycle the same filter from month to month without ever giving it a second’s thought. They allow it to become clogged and riddled with debris and dust from around the home. This filter is holding you back from having proper indoor air quality and a properly functioning furnace. Four Seasons is here to set things straight with a reminder to change your filter with the change of the seasons.
High Efficiency Filters
Many homeowners have graduated from using the cheap fiberglass filters and upgraded to a higher efficiency filter. These filters do not have to be changed as frequently as fiberglass filters do, and though this may be convenient, it also makes it very easy to forget about the furnace filter all together. However, you must not let your furnace fall victim to the consequences of an old filter. (more…)

Have you entered your home from outside and noticed multiple odors? Is it from cooking, dirty laundry, smoking or trash that needs to be taken out? Does your home smell musty? You can purchase spray, plug-in or standing air fresheners or burn countless candles to try and mask these odors, but the expense of these products can add-up! Why not invest in a Healthy Climate Media Air Cleaner instead?
Capturing and Eliminating Odors
The air cleaners offered by Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning work with the heating and cooling system in your home. They will help to bring cleaner air into your home and help reduce the amount of money spent on air fresheners. They do this by getting to the source of the problem and not just masking it like air fresheners do. These filters actually capture and remove odor causing particles from the air like molds and other debris. When it comes to cooking and smoke, these filters come with an activated carbon filter option that can capture these scents and leave behind nothing but fresh, clean smelling air. (more…)

During the heat wave, Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning appeared on Fox Chicago News to give homeowners across Chicagoland some tips to keep their air conditioners going during the long weeks of heat that we experienced. Their news crew followed one of our expert technicians on a service call where the homeowner’s problem was caused by airflow issues into the air conditioner. However, this wasn’t the only air conditioner that we repaired during that week that had air flow issues, so we decided that now would be the perfect time to remind homeowners of the importance of proper air flow when it comes to taking care of their air conditioner.
Monthly Filter Changes
This particular homeowner that we visited had issues with his filter and with the condenser outside his home. First, when our technician removed the customer’s filter, he immediately saw why the air conditioner was not working. What looked like months of caked on debris and dust were found clogging the filter and this was subsequently choking the air conditioner. The inadequate air flow kept causing the air conditioner to shut itself down in order to prevent damage. A quick filter change solved this problem, and our technician stressed the importance of monthly filter changes especially during the peak of the season. (more…)
