Last summer, I went out on a repair call for an air conditioner that wasn’t cooling. At least that’s the message the dispatcher sent me over the phone. When I arrived at the home the customer seemed a little distant, sort of like her mind was somewhere else. After she told me about the problem she was having we both went to the basement to look at her furnace. As I walked up to it I immediately saw the problem. The insulated Freon line was frozen. A large chunk of ice was right where the Freon line goes into the plenum near the furnace. Unfortunately, this wasn’t her only problem.
Mold in the Humidifier
Once you discover that much ice on the outside of the furnace, you know the coil inside of the plenum is iced up just as bad. I removed the cover to the humidifier so I could see how much ice had accumulated, and to my surprise the humidifier pad was covered with black and green mold. The first words out of my mouth were this pad needs to be changed; there is enough mold here to make someone sick. I wish I had chosen my words more carefully. (more…)

When you are going through a home remodel or repair that could produce large amounts of dust and debris, it is important to protect your HVAC system from exposure to these materials as best you can. Here at Four Seasons, we seal all ducts when possible to prevent the circulation of debris throughout the home during a remodeling project, but other contractors may not take this precaution. As a result, the duct work, the furnace and the air conditioner could become littered with large amounts of drywall dust and other debris from the project that can reduce the efficiency of your system. Luckily there are a few precautions that you can take to limit any damage to the system and any spread of the mess created by your remodeling project.
Frequent Filter Change and Duct Cleaning Services
Try to plan repair projects for times of the year when you can expect fair weather. Mild temperatures will allow you to shut down the HVAC system and prevent the circulation of any particles created by the remodeling job. Then all you have to do is close off the vents in the area that is being worked on, and any mess will be contained to that one area of the home. However, weather is unpredictable and living in Chicago usually means that there aren’t many mild days where you can afford to go without heating or cooling. So, when you have no choice but to run the system, protect it as best you can by frequently checking and changing the filters and having the system cleaned once the work has been completed. (more…)

Many allergy sufferers have enjoyed the long winter away from itchy eyes, sore throats, and nasal congestion, but spring is almost here. As the flowers bloom and the grass grows, allergens will be released into the air and into our homes. If you use a furnace or air conditioner with a duct work system to circulate the air, these allergens could be flying around in the air of your home making it very difficult to get control of your allergy symptoms. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to rid your home of as many allergens as possible, and Four Seasons has the experts to help you get it done.
Your Duct Work
The duct work system in your home is breeding ground for mold, dust mites, pet dander, and a plethora of other allergy causing particles. The dark and sometimes damp bends and twists of your duct work system are the perfect place for these microorganisms and particles to collect, and removing them is nearly impossible without help from a duct cleaning company. Take a moment to consider the age of your home. Unless you recently moved into a new construction, odds are your home is somewhere in the 30 to 50 year old range. Even if you live in one of the more recently developed suburbs, your home is probably getting closer and closer to 20 years old with every passing year. Most people are faced with the task of replacing the furnace and air conditioner in their home at least once depending on the amount of time you spend living there. If you have lived there for life of the home, odds are you have replaced the systems at least a few times, but what you may be forgetting is that you have probably never replaced the ENTIRE HVAC system.
Old, Crumbling Duct Work
The duct work is a vital component of your heating and cooling system, and if it hasn’t been replaced or at least inspected since the home was built, you may already be experiencing some of the problems that are caused by old duct work. Air flow is usually the biggest problem and it is a hard one to solve without addressing the ancient duct work. You can get a furnace with highest speed blower on the market and still not get adequate airflow to all areas of the home. Leaks and even crumbling parts of the system will prevent proper airflow, but Four Seasons can solve this problem for you! (more…)

Source removal is the only method of air duct cleaning supported by NADCA. As a member of NADCA, Four Seasons abides by this standard of practice, but what does source removal mean for our customers? Simply put, source removal is a method of removing particles from the duct work of a home without allowing them into the homeowner’s breathing air. Seems like the logical way to remove contaminants from a home right? Well, for many unscrupulous companies, this is not a common practice. Accidentally hiring one of these companies to clean the duct in your home could actually make the air quality in your home worse rather than better.
Major Mishap
During a duct cleaning, a legitimate company like Four Seasons will seal the vents and use certain devices to agitate the particles in your duct work while a large vacuum system sucks the particles from the ducts to a collection device. If this process were not done properly, it could lead to the release of dust, pollen, mold spores, and other airborne particles into the air of the home. This would drastically raise the levels of these particulates in your breathing air, and require immediate cleaning in order to prevent any health problems. (more…)

The Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, is looking for justice for some of the most vulnerable members of our population here in the Chicagoland area. Our senior citizens have been targeted by a number of different scams, but in this suit, Illinois is taking on a duct cleaning company that stole thousands of dollars from elderly homeowners.
The Suit
In the suit, it was found that the company in question was deceiving homeowners by convincing them that they had mold present in the home. The cleaners would show the homeowner pictures of the mold that was supposedly in the ducts, but in reality the picture was not even taken in that particular person’s home.
After the crew supposedly cleaned the mess, the price that was originally quoted would suddenly skyrocket. These charges were added on without the homeowner’s knowledge or consent, but many handed over payment to evade threats from the company’s owner. These services were not needed, and the evidence provided to the consumer was false. (more…)

Nearly every duct cleaning company in the industry, along with the Better Business Bureau and countless news broadcasting companies, has tried to warn consumers about the deceptive tactics that illegitimate duct cleaning companies use to make a quick buck. However, this multimillion dollar con is still claiming victims across our country and in the great city of Chicago.
A Popular Lie
Their most well known scam involves attracting customers with an impossibly low price. They will then raise the price at the time of service through the cost of add-ons that the customer doesn’t really need. Although the consumer thought they were getting their air ducts cleaned for $69, in the end, they pay hundreds and maybe even thousands of their hard earned dollars on poorly performed services.
