Nothing is more satisfying on an icy cold winter day than taking a nice hot shower or bath. Unfortunately, there are countless people that attempt to enjoy this simple pleasure and find themselves with a scald burn. Many of us will leave the tub or shower unattended while it warms up, but set the dial too far to the left and you could cause some serious damage to your skin. This can be even more so damaging to the skin of small children if they are placed into a bath with too hot water or if they are new to taking showers. It is easy enough to prevent this from happening in your home and all it takes is a simple adjustment of your hot water tank’s thermostat.
Set the Tank Temperature Back!
Go down to your hot water tank and check what temperature you currently have it set at. If it is set higher than 120-130 degrees, here is your potential problem. Roll back the thermostat to 120 degrees and see if you notice a difference. Odd are your showers will be just as comfortable as they have always been, but you will not longer stand the risk of burning yourself or your family members. (more…)

Your home is your sanctuary, and odds are you have invested quite a bit of money into the place. You want it to be nice and you want it to be comfortable. When the furnace and air conditioning system are due for replacement, you are going to want to make the best investment for your home. Most homeowners are initially driven by price when comparing and contrasting furnaces and air conditioners, but what they should really be looking for is the best value for their needs. When comparing your offers, you will look for a system that offers comfort, lower utility bills and an increased resale value on the home if possible. If all you are looking at is price, chances are you won’t find all of these things. You need to consider both the quality of the contractor you are going to make this agreement with and the true value of the investment you are about to make.
Choosing Your Heating and Cooling Contractor
When deciding on what equipment and what company will do the best job, it is essential to do your homework. Is the company accredited with the BBB, what is there rating on social media sites. What brand HVAC equipment do they offer, what are the guarantees, are they open 24 hours a day for your needs, do they charge additional fees for evening, after hours, weekend or holiday service. These are questions that when answered will lead you to the best company to meet your HVAC needs. (more…)

Ever notice how the temperature can drop significantly just by moving from one room to another? This is a common problem in many homes and it can be cause by any number of things. High ceilings, lofts, large expanses of glass, or poorly insulated rooms can all cause this type of temperature swing, and many of you may have thought that there really is no way to fix this. Well, Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning has a solution and it doesn’t involve any major changes to the appearance of the home. It’s called zoning, and nearly any forced air unit can be placed on this type of system.
Problems Solved by Zoning the Home:
- Eliminate Energy Waste: Why waste money heating rooms up that no one is going to be in? A zoning system from Four Seasons will help you conserve energy by only warming up the rooms that are currently in use. The rooms that aren’t in use can hover at a much lower temperature than the rooms you actually occupy. This will ensure that the furnace is only used where absolutely needed and waste is eliminated.
- Eliminate Unwanted Temperature Changes: If you have temperature swings in your home from room to room, a zoning system can cure this issue. Rooms that need less heat can be turned down at their thermostat, and those that are excessively cold can get the boost they need to ensure total comfort. (more…)

Homeowners across Chicagoland are looking for quick and easy ways to save money on their heating bills this winter. Many have invested money in new systems, improved insulation, and other energy efficient home improvements, but others want to save money without having to spend money. We honestly can’t blame them, but it is extremely important to know what you are doing before you make a change that could damage your furnace or your home. One such change involves closing off registers or vents in rooms that are not used very frequently.
Restricting Furnace Air Flow
When you close off registers to certain rooms in the home you can run into a few problems. The main problem is caused when you close off too many registers in the home, and this can happen inadvertently as well. If you close more than 30% of the registers, you could start chocking the furnace. Your furnace needs a certain amount of airflow to run properly, and when you close off registers, you deny the furnace some airflow. A bed, dresser, or other piece of furniture placed too close to a register or over one could also lead to airflow problems in your furnace. This could lead to premature part failure and overheating of the system. In the end you would pay more on your energy bills because the furnace would have to work harder to heat the remaining rooms in the home. (more…)

Buying a new furnace for your home can feel like running through a maze. There are so many options to choose from and it’s hard to figure out exactly which is the right way to go. Four Seasons has sought to simplify this process for the homeowner, but in doing so, we have found that many homeowners think that AFUE ratings are the only thing that matter when buying a new unit. Yes, these percentages are important because they reflect the amount of energy your furnace will use and waste, but they are not the bottom line when it comes to picking the right unit for your home.
How Much Electricity Does Your Furnace Use?
There are many other factors to take into account and one of them is the amount of electricity your furnace will be using. Many homeowners don’t even realize that their furnace does consume electricity, and depending on the unit you choose, some consume more than others. It comes down to what kind of circulating fan, or blower motor, is inside the unit and how much you will be using this fan to move air throughout your home. (more…)

Our congress may be debating day in and day out the value of going green as far as our government is concerned, but for the average American, going green should be common sense. Our argument isn’t about global warming or diminishing fossil fuels, but it is about saving you money! Any homeowner that is looking to save money should care about going green, and should be taking certain steps to make their home more energy efficient. Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning is in the business of saving you and your family money and that is why we are also in the business of going green. From energy efficient furnaces to attic insulation services, we have a plethora of ways that you can go green and start saving today.
The Best Big and Little Changes You Can Make
Not all green home improvements are created equal. Some will save you more money than others, and depending on your home’s situation, you may be in greater need of one improvement over another. You should also consider your budget when you are looking to go green. Some home improvements are more expensive than others, but you don’t have to break the bank in order to go green. In our humble opinion, replacing the furnace is the best large investment and adding attic insulation is the best small investment you can make into the energy efficiency of your home. (more…)

Last week we talked about how the federal government is offering tax rebates for those that upgrade their HVAC system, but The Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2010 will expire December 31, 2011. Under the Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2010, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service is implementing consumer tax credits for homeowners who make these qualified improvements. This is your last chance to take advantage of up to $500 in direct federal tax credit for the purchase of high efficiency heating and cooling products from Lennox. However, there is a bit more time to take advantage of the tax credits offered by Nicor, Peoples Gas, and North Shore Gas, but why should you miss out on any of these rebates when you could call Four Seasons today?
North Shore Gas, Nicor, and People Gas
Nicor, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are all participating in rebate programs that could dave you big bucks on a new furnace, boiler, or hot water tank this winter. Nicor is offering $200 to $250 for high efficiency furnaces, $350 to $450 for high efficiency boilers and $200 for high efficiency water tanks. People Gas is offering $350 to $400 on high efficiency furnaces, $500 to $600 on high efficiency boilers, and $100 on boiler reset controls for exiting units. North Shore Gas is offering $200 to $250 off high efficiency furnaces, $350 to $450 on high efficiency boilers and $100 on boiler reset controls for existing units.
