At Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning we are concerned about all of the duct work in your home not just the ducts used for your HVAC system. For most, there isn’t much more duct work in the home besides that in the HVAC system, but neglecting the duct work in the dryer vent could be one of the biggest mistakes you ever make. Most homeowners that operate gas powered dryers don’t even realize that they have a dryer vent until they have to replace the dryer. It is usually at that time that they also find the vent dangerously packed with lint and that the wrong ducting material was used to create the dryer vent in the first place. Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning can get your dryer vent in proper and safe working condition.
The Wrong Duct Work for Your Dryer Vent
How are you going to know if your dryer vent is using the wrong duct work? Well, when the dryer is out of the way, check to see if you have the accordion-like duct work leading into the wall. It will either be white and made of plastic or look like foil. This is a dangerous type of duct work to use for this application for 2 reasons. First, this duct work creates plenty of grooves for lint to get caught up in. When highly flammable lint becomes trapped in the dryer vent and becomes a fire hazard. The second reason this type of duct work shouldn’t be used is because it is flammable itself. You don’t even need the lint to get stuck in the vent to cause a fire and put your family and your home in danger. (more…)

When you own a home, there could be hundreds of little problems within its walls that are hidden from view. A builder may decide to cut corners or a repairman may “jerry-rig” something to make it work. Either way, you end up with a problem inside the home that is not up to code. At Four Seasons, we have been running across several homes in the Chicagoland area that have problems with their clothes dryer duct and vent. The worst of these problems are vents that do not vent to the outdoors. Instead, they dump into a ceiling or attic, and the problems this can cause could be devastating to a home.
Improperly Venting Dryer Ducts
- Encouraging Mold Growth: As your dryer dries your clothes, it vents out large amounts of hot humid air. In homes that don’t have a proper venting system, all of this hot air could be filling up the damp dark spaces under floorboards and inside the attic. All of this excess moisture creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew to thrive! We have discussed in the past the many dangers of having mold growth in the home, and allowing a problem like this to go unchecked could be encouraging this very serious issue. (more…)

When you are going through a home remodel or repair that could produce large amounts of dust and debris, it is important to protect your HVAC system from exposure to these materials as best you can. Here at Four Seasons, we seal all ducts when possible to prevent the circulation of debris throughout the home during a remodeling project, but other contractors may not take this precaution. As a result, the duct work, the furnace and the air conditioner could become littered with large amounts of drywall dust and other debris from the project that can reduce the efficiency of your system. Luckily there are a few precautions that you can take to limit any damage to the system and any spread of the mess created by your remodeling project.
Frequent Filter Change and Duct Cleaning Services
Try to plan repair projects for times of the year when you can expect fair weather. Mild temperatures will allow you to shut down the HVAC system and prevent the circulation of any particles created by the remodeling job. Then all you have to do is close off the vents in the area that is being worked on, and any mess will be contained to that one area of the home. However, weather is unpredictable and living in Chicago usually means that there aren’t many mild days where you can afford to go without heating or cooling. So, when you have no choice but to run the system, protect it as best you can by frequently checking and changing the filters and having the system cleaned once the work has been completed. (more…)

When it comes to duct cleaning, many homeowners assume that the only ducts in the home that need to be cleaned are the ones that are attached to the central heating and cooling system. However, there is another vent in the home that should be cleaned regularly in order to prevent problems. That vent is the clothes dryer vent. With time this vent can become clogged with lint and other debris, and without proper cleaning, it could lead to some costly problems including high energy bills, frequent appliance replacement, and even house fires.
Warning Signs of a Clogged Vent
If you have a dryer vent in your home that has never been cleaned, there are a few things you should be looking for:
- Musty smells on clothes
- Longer drying times
- Removable filter does not collect a lot of lint
- Lint present in the tub of the dryer
- Multiple cycles to dry one load
- Overheated laundry (more…)

If you have a forced-air HVAC system, like most Chicagoans do, you have an intricate maze of ductwork which connects each of your rooms to your furnace. This maze is usually hidden behind your walls, under your floors and above your ceilings, and is usually as old as your home. There are two types of ducts: returns and supplies. Supply ducts do exactly what their name implies – they supply heating and cooling to each room through registers that are connected to the end of them. Return ducts are less familiar to the average consumer. As supply ducts blow air into your home, return ducts inhale airborne dust, allergens, bacteria, etc. and pull it into your furnace. Most filters used today are not capable of trapping all of this dust and debris, so they are continually recycled through your home. (more…)

Q- How often should I have my furnace maintenance and duct-work cleaning done?
A-Many companies will exaggerate the condition of your furnace or duct work in order to scare you into becoming a repeat customer. The problem is that few of these companies can actually provide any sort of evidence of dirt or debris in either system.
At Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning, we begin by evaluating the individual needs of your family. If your family has pets, health concerns like asthma or allergies or if you have recently done some remodeling in your home, you are going to need your furnace and duct work cleaned more frequently that someone who doesn’t have to compensate for these issues. Furnaces usually need to be cleaned yearly despite these factors, but the frequency of duct cleanings can vary from home to home. Our goal is to create a trusting relationship with you before we ever step foot in your home to perform any kind of service. (more…)
