More Energy Saving Tips

We like to periodically share some quick tips on Saving Energy, here are a few more you may or may not be familiar with.

Install an ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostat to automate your HVAC system and save energy whenever you are not at home or while you are sleeping. A programmable thermostat will adjust temperature settings based on your schedule, and can be overridden for unscheduled events. This “smart thermostat” can turn on the furnace or central air conditioner one hour before arrival and keep it off or at a lower, more energy-efficient temperature on weekends instead of heating or cooling unoccupied space.

Insulation for your hot water tank will prevent energy loss and may even allow you to turn the temperature down and still maintain comfortable water temperatures at points of use, such as faucets and showers. If your water heater is an older, uninsulated unit, consider adding a water heater blanket to prevent heat loss from the tank, and add foam-tube insulation on the first three feet of the hot water pipe out of the heater. Set the water temperature on your water heater only as hot as needed (110°-120° F) to prevent dangerous burns and save energy.

  3. Although effective energy saving requires some investment, one can always start with small things that do not require much of money. e.g., lowering the thermostat on your water heater to 120F (many have 140F by default); turning off gas or electric water heaters when leaving for vacations; sealing gaps or holes around plumbing pipes, ductwork and electrical wiring etc. Small things but big savings :)

Let me also add that windows are a huge source of energy loss so go ahead and change your windows to Low-E ones. Compact fluorescent light bulbs will save you 25% on lighting cost every month and will save a lot of energy as well. By replacing your current old fridge, stove, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer with ENERGY STAR rated appliances, you will also save a significant amount of $ each month. Yes, all this requires quite an investment but it is absolutely worth it.
