Like all homeowners you will be faced with the question repair or replace. It could be your car, washer, dryer, furnace, computer, etc. What should you do when your furnace breaks down and you’re faced with repairing your furnace or replacing it?The first and one of the most important issues is the age of your furnace. If your furnace is over 10 years old, then it is time to replace it. A new furnace can reduce your gas bill by as much as 60%. A new furnace will be much more reliable and is also covered by a parts and labor warranty. You can say good-bye to surprise repair bills.
If you purchase an energy star rated 95% efficient furnace you will qualify for a $1500 energy tax credit from the federal government. President Obama passed a law giving each and every taxpayer a one time $1500 energy tax credit. You may also be entitled to a $450 rebate from your local natural gas company. Currently, Peoples Gas is offering this rebate to all customers who live in the city of Chicago.
If your furnace is not 10 years old or older or if your existing furnace only meets minimum efficiency standards or has been prone to break downs you still may want to consider replacing it. As always, it is better to take a proactive approach to your furnace maintenance and replacement. Be sure to get your furnace cleaned and inspected once a year and be sure to change your furnace filter.
Chicago’s weather is changing and it is going to get worse. Be ready, be prepared and you will be much more comfortable through our long Chicago winter.
