Your Home’s Winter Coat | Evanston, Oak Lawn, Palos Hills

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Have you ever stepped outside on a cold winter day without a jacket on? Even the short trip to grab the morning paper from the driveway can remove all of the heat from your body, and soon you are shivering as you bolt back to the comfort of your well heated home. The effect that the cold has on your body is very similar to the effect that it has on an un-insulated home. Insulation is like a winter coat for your home, and when it is lacking, your home will lose heat very easily. This is a problem that affects your home year round, but there is something you can do about it.

Heat Flow

Heat naturally flows from a warm area to a cold area. So, during the winter, heat flows from the warm interior of your home to the chilled outdoors. Insulation is able to decrease this by creating a resistance to heat flow. This is very similar to how your winter coat will create a resistance to heat flow between your body and the outer temperatures. If your coat has a high heat flow resistance, you will stay warmer for longer. The same principal applies to your home, and unfortunately, many homes do not have enough insulation to effectively resist the loss of heat to the outdoors. The end result is high heating bills because the heat the furnace is creating is being pulled to the outdoors. Stopping this heat flow will save you big bucks and take a load off of the furnace. Insulation: Batts vs. Blown-In | Evanston, Plainfield, Downers Grove

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

You have heard Four Seasons talk about how important it is to have a properly insulated home, and we often put special emphasis on the attic space. This is the area of the home where insulating will have the greatest impact on your comfort and your energy bills. Here at Four Seasons, we use blown-in fiberglass insulation for all of our insulation services. If you have never added insulation to your attic, chances are, the builder installed “batts” of fiberglass insulation. Over time, the batts have settled, and its costing you big bucks year-round on your energy bills. Four Seasons uses a different style of fiberglass insulation because it solves the problems that old batts leave behind.

The Problem with Batts

Batts of fiberglass insulation come in the form of giant rolls, and they are laid out and then stuffed between the floor joists in the attic. With proper insulation, this style of insulation can be effective initially, but any gaps between the joists will only get worse with time. The effectiveness of the material, or the r-value, is diminished as the insulation settles and as more gaps are formed. The barrier created by the insulation is ineffective when it is full of leaks. You could install another layer of batts, but you would still end up with the same problem all over again in a matter of years. Wouldn’t you want to solve the problem for good? (more…)

Should I Insulate My Home? | Harvey, Tinley Park, Olympia Fields

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

You should insulate your home when the following occurs:

>You have an older home and haven’t added insulation. Consider that only 20% of homes built before 1980s are well insulated.

>The distribution of heat in your home is uneven, cold zones in the winter or hot zones in the summer. Adding insulation creates a more uniform temperature and increases comfort by evenly covering your attic across all areas of your home. It is not uncommon to find settling of material if your current attic insulation is more than 15 years old. (more…)

New HVAC System? Get Your Ducts Cleaned! Joliet, Plainfield, Aurora

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

If you have a forced-air HVAC system, like most Chicagoans do, you have an intricate maze of ductwork which connects each of your rooms to your furnace. This maze is usually hidden behind your walls, under your floors and above your ceilings, and is usually as old as your home. There are two types of ducts: returns and supplies. Supply ducts do exactly what their name implies – they supply heating and cooling to each room through registers that are connected to the end of them. Return ducts are less familiar to the average consumer. As supply ducts blow air into your home, return ducts inhale airborne dust, allergens, bacteria, etc. and pull it into your furnace. Most filters used today are not capable of trapping all of this dust and debris, so they are continually recycled through your home. (more…)

A/C is not the only way to stay cool

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

When you think of summer we all think of hot sun outdoors and keeping our homes cool by running our air conditioners. Were there are other ways besides an air conditioner or fans to stay cool indoors. What people often ignore is the amount of attic insulation they have in their homes. That is understandable since the attic is a place we seldom go to, and is not a primary living space. However, if you do not have adequate attic insulation you may be paying more to keep your home cooler this summer.

Here is why, insulation helps to maintain uniform temperatures throughout your house. It keeps walls, ceilings and floors warmer. Over time insulation settles and does not provide the barrier it did when first installed. If you have gaps in your insulation then cold air and warm air will mix minimizing the effectiveness of your cooling system. During the summer heat transfers from outside  into your home so your cooling system works harder to remove that warm air.

The best way to know if you have sufficient attic insulation is to have a professional company like Four Seasons Heating & Air Conditioning come to your home and measure. The performance of insulation is measured by R – value, and every region of the United States has a recommend level of R-value depending on that regions climate. If you have an uncovered attic floor and your attic insulation is below the attic floor joist it is likely you do not have sufficient insulation.

Just as we mentioned when we started the whole point is to keep your home cool while saving money and attic insulation will help to reduce your cooling cost. This savings can be significant, plus keep in mind that through the end of 2010 the government is providing up to $1,500 in tax credits when you purchase attic insulation. In effect the attic insulation will not only save you money but also help pay for itself in the form of tax credits.
