Many heating and air conditioning companies will tell you horror stories about how your furnace will be taken over by mold if you do not have it cleaned every year. Well, there is some truth to their fear mongering, and though it may be rare, some families do end up with a furnace full of mold at the end of the summer season. However, it is much more likely that your furnace will simply be packed with dust and other debris from buildup over its long time in hibernation, but dust isn’t much better than mold when it comes to the damage it can do to your system and your comfort. Our Four Seasons technicians have seen first hand what years of dust buildup can do to a furnace and unless you want your furnace to meet the same fate, you may want to consider having annual maintenance checks performed by Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning.
What Can Dust Do to Your Furnace?
- Burning Smell: It is really easy to find out if you have a dust buildup problem in your furnace. Just as yourself one question. Does it smell like something is burning when you turn on the furnace? If you answered yes than you know the unit needs a cleaning. Every year you allow the dust to be burnt off like that you allow a fresh layer of baked in gunk to take hold of the inside of your system. (more…)

In some parts of Chicago, we are already experiencing wind chills below zero, and many of us may be itching to turn the furnace on if even just to warm the house up for a few hours. However, many of the homeowners out there right now should do anything but turn on their furnace. Flooding was an all too common occurrence over this past summer season, and even those that had only a few inches of water in the home need to have the furnace looked at before they start it up for the season. Flood waters can do some devastating damage to furnaces and boilers, and even if your air conditioner was working fine all season, you should still have the system checked over. A certified furnace or boiler expert from Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning can help you determine what kind of shape your furnace is in after the flood, and can hopefully get your heat back up and running before the temperatures drop too low this fall.
A Dangerous Decision
Every year many homeowners ignore this advice and start using the furnace without having it checked. Even if the unit does fire up and seem to be working, odds are it will only last until you need it the most. For many homeowners the unit will work just long enough to get them into the thick of winter and then they must call Four Seasons for emergency service in order to keep their family comfortable and their home safe. Believe it or not this is actually the best thing that could happen to a water damaged system, and we have seen much worse things go wrong with water damaged furnaces. (more…)

At Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning we always kick off the start of a new season with a discount! Right now the calls are flooding in for yearly furnace and boiler maintenance checks, so we decided that homeowners could benefit most right now from a discount of their clean and check. This service, which normally runs for $129.95 is currently being offered for the low price of $89.95 with the coupon that can be found on this site or perhaps even in your mailbox. That is a $40 discount on a service that is worth every single penny of the original asking price.
Undercutting by Our Competition
If you were to sift through the Sunday discount papers you would probably find at least a few companies that are offering a service that is similar to the one you will find advertized by Four Seasons. Some may offer a discount that is close to the same price we offer, but you will find some that offer a price that is drastically lower than the one we are giving out. Your first impulse may be to discard Four Seasons and call this no name company just because their price is lower, but we would ask you to stop and think about this for one moment before calling. Consider the quality of the service you will be getting, and consider the likelihood that this discount may be a scam in disguise. (more…)

You can never have enough information when it comes to protecting your family from carbon monoxide poisoning, so we have come up with four more tips to keep in mind this winter as we all begin to use our heating equipment once again. We went straight to our technicians and asked for some of their advice, and these four tips are what they produced:
- Yearly Check-up: When you have your furnace maintained yearly by Four Seasons, the technician will always test for the presence of carbon monoxide. During the inspection he will be able to locate even small carbon monoxide leaks and repair them before they become a major safety hazard in the home. There are many benefits to having the furnace or boiler tuned up, but this is probably one of the most critical reasons to consider this service this fall.
- CO Detector Life Spans: Many homeowners believe the misconception that you only need to purchase carbon monoxide detectors once, but this belief could not be more wrong. Most carbon monoxide detectors last only a few years although some may last up to ten. After their expiration, they can no longer be considered a reliable source for carbon monoxide readings. There have been many times our technicians will enter a home, find very high readings of CO, and then find that the carbon monoxide detectors were no longer functioning. The unit may still test as functional, but unless you know for sure that they last longer, your carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced every five years. (more…)

After over 40 years of providing heating and cooling services to the Chicagoland area, you would think that we would be used to the weather in this windy city. However, it never ceases to amaze us how one week it is 90s and sweltering and the next it is 60s and chilly. Well whether you like it or not, fall has arrived and winter will soon be following in on its coattails. This change of season means that Four Seasons has begun scheduling our yearly tune-ups on furnaces and boilers, and if you don’t act now to get yourself signed up, we may find yourself in need to emergency service when the first frost moves in.
Preferred Scheduling
The coupons are out and the calls have been flooding in. As our tune-up schedule begins to fill, we always feel the need to remind our customers of the importance of scheduling your furnace tune-up early on in the season. Those that do find that they can pretty much pick their date and time and some are even able to get in same day. As the temperatures continue to drop, more and more emergency service calls will be needed. This reduces room for cleanings and therefore may make scheduling slightly more difficult. The other problem is that many of these emergency calls are from customers that forgot to have cleanings done early and found themselves in need of heat sooner than they thought. (more…)

I had a customer last summer who was one of the hundreds of Chicagoans that had a flood in their basement. She was very upset with us when she found out we were unable to repair her furnace. It had been submerged under a few feet of water, and according to GAMA, any gas appliance that has been under flood waters is unsafe to operate. These systems must be replaced. But, who is GAMA, and why would they care what I do?
Who is GAMA?
GAMA stands for Gas Appliance Manufacturer Association. They are the national trade association that represents the manufacturers of gas appliances like furnaces, boilers, and hot water tanks. GAMA makes sure that the gas appliances we buy meet stringent safety standards, and they are the reason we cannot fix flooded equipment. Well, to be fair, they aren’t the only reason. Common sense also tells us that trying to repair water damaged equipment is a terrible way to conduct business, and GAMA simply reinforces common sense. (more…)

Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning likes to talk a lot about energy efficiency in the heating and cooling industry, but many homeowners are still clueless when it comes to understanding the importance of having an energy efficient furnace or boiler operating in their homes. Furnace and boiler efficiency is measured in AFUE or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. This is a percentage that represents the amount of natural gas that is actually converted into heat for your home.
For instance, an 80% AFUE furnace uses 80% of its gas to create heat, and the other 20% is lost during the combustion process. Therefore, the higher the percentage, the less gas you will use, and the lower your energy bills will be. There are different efficiency ranges, and it is important to understand the benefits and losses associated with owning a unit that falls within one of these ranges.
The Energy Efficiency Spectrum
- 65% AFUE or Lower: The general rule of thumb when determining the energy efficiency of your current heating system is: the older the unit the lower the rating. Most furnaces and boilers that are fifteen years old or older are at best 65% efficient with the gas that they consume. This is extremely wasteful, and operating a system that is this inefficient is a waste of your hard earned money. (more…)

Attention Boiler Owners! Have you had your boiler cleaned and checked this year? Though you may not think that proper maintenance is a big deal, having the boiler serviced annually by a professional is the only way to ensure that the unit has a long, healthy, and reliable operating life. At Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning we are Chicago’s premiere boiler specialists, and we have the knowledge and expertise you need to keep your boiler in shape for the remainder of this winter season and for years to come. Just like furnace owners have to replace their air filter every month, boiler owners have a few checks they should also complete in between the annual maintenance from Four Seasons.
Do It Yourself Boiler Checks:
- Maintain the Boiler Room: Your boiler may be located in a basement, a crawlspace, an attic, or it may even have its own room, but no matter where the system is located, that area needs to remain clean. Don’t clutter the boiler room with boxes or other items for storage. These items can make it hard to access the boiler easily, and therefore make it difficult to recognize potential problems with the system. Also, it is important to sweep out the area on a regular basis. Dust and debris can clog the pilot or other crucial system components, and cause damage to the system. (more…)
