Indoor Air Pollutants: Formaldehyde | Des Plaines, Glenview, Oak Park

Monday, June 20th, 2011

When it comes to indoor air pollution, many immediately think of carbon monoxide, pollen, or mold as the main contributors. You may install CO detectors, clean up after floods, and take allergy medications to prevent any of these pollutants from taking effect in your home, but are you doing anything to protect your family from formaldehyde? Here at Four Seasons, we find that many people know little to nothing about the potential health effects of this harmful compound, and many more don’t even realize that they could have formaldehyde already in their home! There is one easy way to remove this pollutant, and as always, Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning has the solution!

Formaldehyde Can Affect Anyone!

Certain pollutants are more common in older homes when compared to newer constructions, but when it comes to formaldehyde, any home at any age can have a high presence of this chemical. Years ago this compound was used in insulation materials, and these days, formaldehyde is still used in many construction materials and carpets. The effects that this pollutant can have on your family are truly shocking, and those that are extra sensitive, like the elderly, the very young, and those with respiratory conditions, can become very sick by breathing in this microscopic poison. Some of the health problems that have been found include: (more…)

Air Quality Horror Stories! | Buffalo Grove, Calumet Park, Elgin

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Last summer, I went out on a repair call for an air conditioner that wasn’t cooling. At least that’s the message the dispatcher sent me over the phone. When I arrived at the home the customer seemed a little distant, sort of like her mind was somewhere else. After she told me about the problem she was having we both went to the basement to look at her furnace. As I walked up to it I immediately saw the problem. The insulated Freon line was frozen. A large chunk of ice was right where the Freon line goes into the plenum near the furnace. Unfortunately, this wasn’t her only problem.

Mold in the Humidifier

Once you discover that much ice on the outside of the furnace, you know the coil inside of the plenum is iced up just as bad. I removed the cover to the humidifier so I could see how much ice had accumulated, and to my surprise the humidifier pad was covered with black and green mold. The first words out of my mouth were this pad needs to be changed; there is enough mold here to make someone sick. I wish I had chosen my words more carefully. (more…)

Remodeling Your Home? Protect Your Ducts! | Maywood, Evergreen Park

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

When you are going through a home remodel or repair that could produce large amounts of dust and debris, it is important to protect your HVAC system from exposure to these materials as best you can. Here at Four Seasons, we seal all ducts when possible to prevent the circulation of debris throughout the home during a remodeling project, but other contractors may not take this precaution. As a result, the duct work, the furnace and the air conditioner could become littered with large amounts of drywall dust and other debris from the project that can reduce the efficiency of your system. Luckily there are a few precautions that you can take to limit any damage to the system and any spread of the mess created by your remodeling project.

Frequent Filter Change and Duct Cleaning Services

Try to plan repair projects for times of the year when you can expect fair weather. Mild temperatures will allow you to shut down the HVAC system and prevent the circulation of any particles created by the remodeling job. Then all you have to do is close off the vents in the area that is being worked on, and any mess will be contained to that one area of the home. However, weather is unpredictable and living in Chicago usually means that there aren’t many mild days where you can afford to go without heating or cooling. So, when you have no choice but to run the system, protect it as best you can by frequently checking and changing the filters and having the system cleaned once the work has been completed. (more…)

Source Removal Air Duct Cleaning| Calumet City, Merionette Park

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Source removal is the only method of air duct cleaning supported by NADCA. As a member of NADCA, Four Seasons abides by this standard of practice, but what does source removal mean for our customers? Simply put, source removal is a method of removing particles from the duct work of a home without allowing them into the homeowner’s breathing air. Seems like the logical way to remove contaminants from a home right? Well, for many unscrupulous companies, this is not a common practice. Accidentally hiring one of these companies to clean the duct in your home could actually make the air quality in your home worse rather than better.

Major Mishap

During a duct cleaning, a legitimate company like Four Seasons will seal the vents and use certain devices to agitate the particles in your duct work while a large vacuum system sucks the particles from the ducts to a collection device. If this process were not done properly, it could lead to the release of dust, pollen, mold spores, and other airborne particles into the air of the home. This would drastically raise the levels of these particulates in your breathing air, and require immediate cleaning in order to prevent any health problems. (more…)

Illinois Fights Back Against Duct Cleaning Scam! | Justice, Alsip, Phoenix

Monday, January 31st, 2011

The Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, is looking for justice for some of the most vulnerable members of our population here in the Chicagoland area. Our senior citizens have been targeted by a number of different scams, but in this suit, Illinois is taking on a duct cleaning company that stole thousands of dollars from elderly homeowners.

The Suit

In the suit, it was found that the company in question was deceiving homeowners by convincing them that they had mold present in the home. The cleaners would show the homeowner pictures of the mold that was supposedly in the ducts, but in reality the picture was not even taken in that particular person’s home.

After the crew supposedly cleaned the mess, the price that was originally quoted would suddenly skyrocket. These charges were added on without the homeowner’s knowledge or consent, but many handed over payment to evade threats from the company’s owner. These services were not needed, and the evidence provided to the consumer was false. (more…)

Save Without Being Scammed| Oak Forest, Addison, Westmont

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Nearly every duct cleaning company in the industry, along with the Better Business Bureau and countless news broadcasting companies, has tried to warn consumers about the deceptive tactics that illegitimate duct cleaning companies use to make a quick buck. However, this multimillion dollar con is still claiming victims across our country and in the great city of Chicago.

A Popular Lie

Their most well known scam involves attracting customers with an impossibly low price. They will then raise the price at the time of service through the cost of add-ons that the customer doesn’t really need. Although the consumer thought they were getting their air ducts cleaned for $69, in the end, they pay hundreds and maybe even thousands of their hard earned dollars on poorly performed services. Do It Yourself Duct Cleaning Disaster| Chicago Heights, Westchester, Harvey

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Many of us like to do projects around the home on our own, and having the know-how to complete these projects can save you both time and money. However, there are certain jobs that should only be handled by the professionals, and cleaning the air ducts is one of those jobs. Cleaning the air ducts on your own can cause several problems including:

  • Insufficient Removal of Particles: Most of the sites that offer “do it yourself” duct cleaning tips suggest using your vacuum cleaners hose to remove dust and other particles from the areas of the duct work that you can access. The first problem with attempting to use this technique is the fact that a good portion of the duct work in your home is inaccessible using the 4 foot hose on your vacuum cleaner. That leaves large portions of the duct work untouched and therefore still dirty.
  • Inefficient Removal of Particles: When professional duct cleaners, like those at Four Seasons, clean your duct work, they will hook up a powerful vacuum system that will create negative air pressure within your duct work. As their tools kick up the particles in your air ducts, they are removed from the home safely and efficiently by this vacuum system. When you attempt to use your little vacuums hose, you kick up the particles in the duct work, but have no way to capture them. Suddenly the home is covered in dust and debris from the duct work. Winter Allergy Relief | Crest Hill, Country Club Hills, Riverdale

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning has many services and products that can potentially offer allergy symptom relief to many this winter season. Winter allergies can often be as bad if not worse than the spring and summer allergies that most of us are accustomed to hearing about, and being cooped up indoors, for months at a time, makes those with allergies very susceptible to the indoor air pollutants that plague thousands of homes in Chicago and the Chicago land area. Duct cleanings, furnace cleanings, air purifiers, and humidifiers are all excellent options to decrease the presence of allergens in the home, and Four Seasons can make implementing these products and services in your home a breeze this winter season.

  • Duct Cleaning Services: Four Seasons offers professional duct cleaning services that will clear the pollen, dust, mold, and dander from your duct work system. These are allergens that are constantly circulating in the air when the furnace is running, and a duct cleaning will greatly reduce their presence in your home.
  • Furnace Cleaning Services: Yearly furnace maintenance tune-ups are important if you want to keep your furnace running reliably all winter long. But, these cleanings can also help relieve allergy symptoms. A dirty furnace is packed with dust and other allergens and as the air in your home passes through the furnace to be warmed, it picks up these allergens. These particles are then delivered to all of the rooms in your home. Combine this service with a monthly filter change and a duct cleaning, and you will greatly improve your indoor air quality.
