Having work performed in the home can create quite a mess. From dirty floors and walls to construction dust on every surface, getting the home back to its original condition after the repairs or remodeling jobs have been completed can prove to be quite a task. Many construction companies will clean up after themselves, but nearly all of them forget about the mess they made of one very crucial system in the home: the HVAC system! All of that dust, debris, and odor will be swept up into the duct work to be transferred through the furnace and then re-circulated throughout the home. Depending on how extensive the work was, you may have a serious air quality and furnace efficiency problem leftover. You are going to need someone to clean up this system, and Four Seasons has got your back.
Cleaning Up After Construction
- Duct Cleaning: Many homeowners have never had the ducts cleaned in the home, so odds are they are not only full of construction debris but also years and years of particle build up. A professional duct cleaning from Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning is the only way to restore this part of the system back to peak performance and bring clean air back into your home. Without this service, you could be left breathing in construction dust for years to come.
- Heating and Cooling Cleaning: With all of that debris circulating through the ducts, it will have to pass through the furnace and air conditioner as well. If you aren’t using advanced filtration system to capture these particles before they dirty up the furnace, then you probably have a mess inside your system that could be causing a massive decrease in energy efficiency. Burners and heat exchangers that are coated in a layer or dust and debris cannot transfer heat as effectively and energy efficiency suffers. You will end up paying more to use the furnace every month because the system will need to burn more fuel to keep up. (more…)

As we slowly begin to accept that summer is over, we start the transition from warm weather to cold. We pack away our tank tops and shorts. We replace weather stripping and switch the thermostat over to “heat,” but what we really should be doing is changing our filter. Every year, hundreds of homeowners recycle the same filter from month to month without ever giving it a second’s thought. They allow it to become clogged and riddled with debris and dust from around the home. This filter is holding you back from having proper indoor air quality and a properly functioning furnace. Four Seasons is here to set things straight with a reminder to change your filter with the change of the seasons.
High Efficiency Filters
Many homeowners have graduated from using the cheap fiberglass filters and upgraded to a higher efficiency filter. These filters do not have to be changed as frequently as fiberglass filters do, and though this may be convenient, it also makes it very easy to forget about the furnace filter all together. However, you must not let your furnace fall victim to the consequences of an old filter. (more…)

Have you ever thought the home was warmer or colder than the thermostat was reading? This is a very common problem in many homes, and it could cause a great disruption in your family’s comfort and an increase in your energy bills. A thermostat that can’t properly read the temperature in the home could keep the furnace on for longer times than necessary this winter. The longer the furnace runs the more energy you could be wasting. Taking ten minutes out of your weekend could change your utility bills all winter. Four Seasons want you to take these few tips and get your thermostat working at its best.
Dust Distorting Temperature Controls
The thermostat has sensors inside it that tell it when to turn off the furnace and when to start it up. If your thermostat is very old, you may even have mercury inside it that performs this same function. If your thermostat has these sensors inside it, they may be coated with dust, and that dust could be what is interfering with your thermostat’s ability to match the temperature in the home. (more…)

Many heating and air conditioning companies will tell you horror stories about how your furnace will be taken over by mold if you do not have it cleaned every year. Well, there is some truth to their fear mongering, and though it may be rare, some families do end up with a furnace full of mold at the end of the summer season. However, it is much more likely that your furnace will simply be packed with dust and other debris from buildup over its long time in hibernation, but dust isn’t much better than mold when it comes to the damage it can do to your system and your comfort. Our Four Seasons technicians have seen first hand what years of dust buildup can do to a furnace and unless you want your furnace to meet the same fate, you may want to consider having annual maintenance checks performed by Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning.
What Can Dust Do to Your Furnace?
- Burning Smell: It is really easy to find out if you have a dust buildup problem in your furnace. Just as yourself one question. Does it smell like something is burning when you turn on the furnace? If you answered yes than you know the unit needs a cleaning. Every year you allow the dust to be burnt off like that you allow a fresh layer of baked in gunk to take hold of the inside of your system. (more…)

When you are going through a home remodel or repair that could produce large amounts of dust and debris, it is important to protect your HVAC system from exposure to these materials as best you can. Here at Four Seasons, we seal all ducts when possible to prevent the circulation of debris throughout the home during a remodeling project, but other contractors may not take this precaution. As a result, the duct work, the furnace and the air conditioner could become littered with large amounts of drywall dust and other debris from the project that can reduce the efficiency of your system. Luckily there are a few precautions that you can take to limit any damage to the system and any spread of the mess created by your remodeling project.
Frequent Filter Change and Duct Cleaning Services
Try to plan repair projects for times of the year when you can expect fair weather. Mild temperatures will allow you to shut down the HVAC system and prevent the circulation of any particles created by the remodeling job. Then all you have to do is close off the vents in the area that is being worked on, and any mess will be contained to that one area of the home. However, weather is unpredictable and living in Chicago usually means that there aren’t many mild days where you can afford to go without heating or cooling. So, when you have no choice but to run the system, protect it as best you can by frequently checking and changing the filters and having the system cleaned once the work has been completed. (more…)

Many allergy sufferers have enjoyed the long winter away from itchy eyes, sore throats, and nasal congestion, but spring is almost here. As the flowers bloom and the grass grows, allergens will be released into the air and into our homes. If you use a furnace or air conditioner with a duct work system to circulate the air, these allergens could be flying around in the air of your home making it very difficult to get control of your allergy symptoms. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to rid your home of as many allergens as possible, and Four Seasons has the experts to help you get it done.
Your Duct Work
The duct work system in your home is breeding ground for mold, dust mites, pet dander, and a plethora of other allergy causing particles. The dark and sometimes damp bends and twists of your duct work system are the perfect place for these microorganisms and particles to collect, and removing them is nearly impossible without help from a duct cleaning company. Source removal is the only method of air duct cleaning supported by NADCA. As a member of NADCA, Four Seasons abides by this standard of practice, but what does source removal mean for our customers? Simply put, source removal is a method of removing particles from the duct work of a home without allowing them into the homeowner’s breathing air. Seems like the logical way to remove contaminants from a home right? Well, for many unscrupulous companies, this is not a common practice. Accidentally hiring one of these companies to clean the duct in your home could actually make the air quality in your home worse rather than better.
Major Mishap
During a duct cleaning, a legitimate company like Four Seasons will seal the vents and use certain devices to agitate the particles in your duct work while a large vacuum system sucks the particles from the ducts to a collection device. If this process were not done properly, it could lead to the release of dust, pollen, mold spores, and other airborne particles into the air of the home. This would drastically raise the levels of these particulates in your breathing air, and require immediate cleaning in order to prevent any health problems. (more…)

Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning has many services and products that can potentially offer allergy symptom relief to many this winter season. Winter allergies can often be as bad if not worse than the spring and summer allergies that most of us are accustomed to hearing about, and being cooped up indoors, for months at a time, makes those with allergies very susceptible to the indoor air pollutants that plague thousands of homes in Chicago and the Chicago land area. Duct cleanings, furnace cleanings, air purifiers, and humidifiers are all excellent options to decrease the presence of allergens in the home, and Four Seasons can make implementing these products and services in your home a breeze this winter season.
- Duct Cleaning Services: Four Seasons offers professional duct cleaning services that will clear the pollen, dust, mold, and dander from your duct work system. These are allergens that are constantly circulating in the air when the furnace is running, and a duct cleaning will greatly reduce their presence in your home.
- Furnace Cleaning Services: Yearly furnace maintenance tune-ups are important if you want to keep your furnace running reliably all winter long. But, these cleanings can also help relieve allergy symptoms. A dirty furnace is packed with dust and other allergens and as the air in your home passes through the furnace to be warmed, it picks up these allergens. These particles are then delivered to all of the rooms in your home. Combine this service with a monthly filter change and a duct cleaning, and you will greatly improve your indoor air quality. Life is busy especially at this time of year! With all of the running around shopping, cooking, and preparing for parties, furnace care often falls to the wayside. Months may pass without ever thinking about the heating system, and suddenly there is a breakdown. You travel down to the unit, pull the filter, and find that it is packed with debris and dust. This seems to be the cause of your breakdown. Unfortunately, you haven’t stocked up on replacements, so you figure that for the time being you will just let the unit run without a filter until you can get to the store.
The furnace starts back up and everything seems to be working fine. The only problem is you never do remember to replace the filter, and in a matter of weeks you have a very costly furnace repair on your hands. Running a furnace without a filter is like a death sentence for the unit’s internal components. It is one of the biggest heating mistakes you can make, and here at Four Seasons we find this mistake a lot more than we would like to. (more…)

One of the most frequently asked questions in the HVAC industry is, “How often should I change my furnace filter?” Unfortunately, there isn’t one straightforward answer that we can give you because there are several factors that play a role in the condition of the filter. Obviously, the first step would be to check the packaging on the filter itself. Usually it will have a recommended length of time after which replacement will be needed. However, here at Four Seasons, we don’t want you to suffer the consequences that come from having a dirty filter, so we recommend that you check the filter monthly. If it is dirty, replace it. If not, wait another month and check again. But, some families should be checking their filters more frequently. These are people who have:
- Pets- pet hair quickly clogs furnace filters
- Several people living in the home- the more people in the home, the more dust and debris that will be floating in the air
- Recent construction in the home- Dust and debris from drywall and other construction materials will cause the filter to need to be changed more frequently (more…)
