Space Heating Safety Precautions| Harvey, Westmont, Lombard

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Here at Four Seasons, we want you to have a safe and comfortable winter, so these are just a few tips to keep in mind when operating your space heater this winter:

  • Placement of the Space Heater: Keep the heater at least 3-5 feet away from anything combustible. Find an area that is open and out of the way of high traffic areas in the home. Most fires are caused by the heater being place too close to combustible materials.
  • The Space Heater’s Cord: If the cord on your heater is old and frayed, DO NOT USE IT! This is a major fire hazard, and the unit should be replaced. Also, if you need to use an extension cord, make sure that it can handle the power load and can fit the grounding prong from the space heaters cord. Running the heater’s cord or the extension cord under carpet or rugs is also a major fire hazard that needs to be avoided.
  • Combustion Heaters: If your heater requires the use of gas or another type of fuel besides electricity, make sure that it is vented properly to the outdoors. Running a combustion unit without proper venting will lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide in the home. (more…)

Water Damaged Furnaces| Chicago Ridge, Cicero, Westchester

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Does anyone remember the huge rainstorms we had this past summer? For many people those storms are now a distant memory, but for far too many homeowners, there is still recovery in progress. The problem is that hundreds of homes suffered severe flooding, and in the process the HVAC systems were damaged. Replacing these units can become costly, and for many families, the furnace still needs to be swapped out. With winter quickly approaching, there isn’t much time left to get your family ready before the temperatures start to drop. At the very least, the furnace must be inspected before you turn it on, and if you neglect to do so, your home could suffer a much more devastating disaster than a little water in the basement. Convert to an Electronic Ignition! | Riverdale, Countryside, Naperville

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The answer to this question is simple: TO SAVE MONEY! If you haven’t replaced your furnace in the last 15 years or so, your furnace probably uses a standing pilot to start up the furnace. The biggest problem with standing pilots is that they use more gas than the newer electronic ignitions that come in the mid to high efficiency furnaces nowadays. Even if your unit isn’t in need of furnace repairs, the inefficiency of older units should be enough to convince you to convert as soon as possible. (more…)

Pair Your Furnace with a Heat Pump| Naperville, Olympia Fields

Friday, September 17th, 2010

One of the biggest complaints among homeowners is high energy bills. Unfortunately for homeowners in Chicago, it is very difficult to sacrifice using the furnace or the air conditioner in order to save a few bucks every month. Our unpredictable summers are one thing, but our winters can be especially brutal. From Chicago all the way to Naperville, we are covered in a blanket of frigid snow. So, how are we going to save money?

What is a Heat Pump?

If you currently have a gas furnace heating your home, you may want to consider adding an electronic heat pump. A heat pump is combination heating and cooling system that uses electricity to move heat rather than to generate heat.  In the summer, the heat pump will act as your air conditioning by removing the hot air from inside your home and moving it outside. In the winter, the heat pump will pull hot air out of the outdoors and bring it indoors. Even if the outside feels cold, there is still heat present in the air for the heat pump to extract for use inside your home. This is a very efficient system because it generates two to three times more heat than the electricity it uses. (more…)
