Now that the cold has returned, the call center at Four Seasons has been flooded with customers scrambling to get their maintenance check performed as soon as possible. Unfortunately, they are not the only people wanting a technician out to their home. The emergency furnace repair calls have also begun, and as more and more people turn on their system, there will be more and more of a wait to have your cleaning performed. Having no heat in your home in Chicago is an emergency especially for the elderly and those with children. These calls must be our priority, and unfortunately, those that need their cleaning done may have to wait a few days.
Clean and Check or Emergency Service?
If you are looking to have a cleaning performed, your furnace should be working. This service is simply meant to keep the unit in its functional condition all winter long and to help the unit run more efficiently during that time as well. Although cleaning off certain parts may solve some problems you may have with the unit, a cleaning is not meant to be a repair. If the furnace doesn’t turn on when you start it up for the season, you fall under the title of “emergency service.” Don’t sit around in the cold waiting for a cleaning with a broken furnace! What you really need is a repair technician at your home today! We feel terrible when we arrive at a customer’s home for a cleaning only to find that they have gone a week without heat waiting for the maintenance check that won’t necessarily solve their problem. Some homeowners turn to the wrong people to handle their repair needs. For instance, let’s say that you slip on some ice and break your arm in the fall. Would you go to some guy down the street to fix it? No, of course you wouldn’t, but going to that guy down the street to fix your furnace would be an equally disastrous mistake. When the furnace or air conditioner breaks down, it can feel like you are at the mercy of the serviceman when the repair work is being performed. Many of us don’t know much about our heating and cooling systems, and frankly we are lucky if we are able to figure out how to replace the filter every month. It is because of this lack of understanding that we blindly hand over our hard earned money to HVAC contractors every time there is a problem with the unit without actually understanding what went wrong in the first place. Nearly every industry has their fair share of scam artists, and the furnace repair business is no different. We hear horror stories on a daily basis of customers who called the wrong company first, and end up losing their hard earned money on unnecessary work. This winter, there are many fraudsters who are going to use the frigid cold temperatures to their advantage. No one wants to be without heat for very long, and for some people going without heat for any period of time could cause major health issues. Scam artists know this fact and manipulate it for their gain.
A Common Furnace Repair Scam
Probably one of the most common furnace repair scams involves heat exchanger inspections. A cracked heat exchanger can cause carbon monoxide to leak into the homes air supply, and it can cause several health problems including the possibility of death. But, it can only do these things if it is actually cracked! A cracked heat exchanger usually results in the purchase of an entire new system, because when a customer hears that there is a problem with the unit that could harm their family, they are quick to fork over large amounts of money to repair the problem.
