High Efficiency Furnace Care | Arlington Heights, Oakbrook Terrace

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

When you upgrade the furnace in your home to a high efficiency unit, you will notice many things that are different about this system when compared to the old unit you had been operating in the home. The ventilation system is completely different, the unit operates very quietly, and hopefully the comfort level has increased as well. These new systems need to be cared for differently than that old unit that you once had. They have different needs you must keep an eye on, but luckily Four Seasons can help you make the transition easy.

Condensation and Your Drain Line

Besides taking special care to have your filters changed on a regular basis, there are a couple other parts of the system you should keep an eye on. The drain line, for example, is a vital component of your new furnace. This until creates a lot of water during its efficient combustion process and that water must be drained. The drain line will safely remove this water from the unit, but only if the line is clear. With a lack of maintenance this line can become easily clogged with mineral deposits and mold. The clog will cause the system to back up and shut itself down until the line is cleared. However, if you have the system regularly maintained by your Four Seasons serviceman, this will not be a problem. (more…)

Reviving the Furnace and Scheduling Maintenance | Libertyville

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Some people will try anything to get the furnace to kick back on during a breakdown without needing to call a professional. They will mess with the thermostat and jiggle wires, and all the while they are crossing their fingers hoping for a miracle. Sometimes, these people get lucky, and maybe you could too! It is true. The majority of furnace problems can be prevented in advance by having regular maintenance performed on the system. However, what happens when you don’t get the furnace cleaned? Well, you end up with a breakdown. Four Seasons would encourage you to have this cleaning performed even if you are one of those lucky people that are able to get the unit to start back up.

Restarting the Furnace

Sometimes all the furnace needs to get going is to be restarted. Like the many electronics out there that can freeze up, you simply reboot the unit and suddenly it works again. This sometimes works with your furnace or other heating system. You turn the unit off at the thermostat. Then you turn the switch off at the furnace, flip the breaker, and manually turn the unit back on before setting the temperature on the thermostat. Suddenly the furnace kicks on and all is well. If this were to happen to you, you should take this as a warning call! Your furnace is having some sort of problem, and it needs to be checked. (more…)

Protecting Your Furnace with Four Seasons | Hanover Park, Alsip

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Your furnace is your home’s source of comfort. As long as that unit keeps running and continues to keep you and your family warm, there is a sense of security in the home. However, your furnace can quickly turn into a source of danger if you don’t take the proper precautions. Having a furnace in the home is like having a well ventilated and circulated fire in the home. It is able to keep everyone warm, but in the process is creates harmful combustion gases that must be expelled from the home. When everything is working properly and well cared for, venting these harmful gases is not a major concern. Yet, when maintenance falls by the wayside, the furnace can cause dangerous problems for your family. Luckily Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning is around to help you keep your furnace in check.

Heat Exchanger Deterioration

Not maintaining the furnace yearly could lead to a variety of problems that will require any number of repairs. But, the problems that a lack of maintenance can cause for your furnace’s heat exchanger are what truly concern us. The heat exchanger expands and contracts with every cycle of the furnace. Over time this will lead to the development of cracks and holes in the steel of the heat exchanger. Nearly all furnaces will meet this fate if they are in operation for long enough, but the goal is to prevent this from happening for as long as possible. That means that you must have yearly furnace cleanings performed on the system along with regular filter replacements. (more…)

Setting Your Thermostat: Going on Vacation | Hoffman Estates

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

The holiday season is a popular time of year for many people to travel. We pack up cars and take planes all over the country to visit family and friends and we leave our homes behind. Every year, without fail, there are hundreds of homeowners in the Chicagoland area that will turn off the thermostat to save some money while they are away, and as a result, they experience a real disaster in the home when they finally get back. We know you want to save some money while you are away, but there is a safer way. Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning is issuing this warning so that you can protect your home this season, and our handymen can help you prepare the home as well.

Frozen and Burst Pipes

Turning off the thermostat when you leave the home can be a big mistake. Sure, you save some money on the energy bills, but you put all of the plumbing fixtures in the home at risk. The winter may have so far been pretty mild, but all you need is one icy cold winter night and suddenly you have frozen pipes. Once that frozen pipe begins to thaw, the water rushing into the pipe may cause it to burst and cause serious water damage to that particular area of the home. The worst part is that if you are out of town, there is no one there to turn off the water supply, so the mess you come home to could be a true home disaster that will cost much more to fix that the little bit of money you were trying to save by turning off the furnace in the first place. Another Problem Solved by Variable Speed Furnaces| Chicago Ridge

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Does it sound like a rushing wind is whistling through your ducts every time the furnace turns on? If so, you are not alone. Many homeowners that are still operating old furnaces in their homes put up with problems like this on a daily basis. Noisy motors have been waking up homeowners for years, but luckily there is a solution to this pesky problem. Last week we talked about how variable speed motors can save you money on your energy bills, but another benefit that comes along with this type of motor is its ability to operate almost noiselessly. The furnace will come on and off and you won’t even realize that it is doing its job. This is how furnaces should work and Lennox furnaces from Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning can give you this type of performance.

Ramping Up and Ramping Down

The reason variable speed motors are able to offer near silent performance is because they don’t just kick on full speed and start pumping air into the room. This is how your current motor is probably running. Instead, they slowly ramp up to speed and when the cycle is finished, they slowly ramp down again. The furnace starting up and shutting down is virtually undetectable amongst the typical noises of everyday life in your home, and it will defiantly not wake you up at night! (more…)

Zoning Your HVAC System | Northlake, Wonder Lake, Greyslake

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Ever notice how the temperature can drop significantly just by moving from one room to another? This is a common problem in many homes and it can be cause by any number of things. High ceilings, lofts, large expanses of glass, or poorly insulated rooms can all cause this type of temperature swing, and many of you may have thought that there really is no way to fix this. Well, Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning has a solution and it doesn’t involve any major changes to the appearance of the home. It’s called zoning, and nearly any forced air unit can be placed on this type of system.

Problems Solved by Zoning the Home:

  • Eliminate Energy Waste: Why waste money heating rooms up that no one is going to be in? A zoning system from Four Seasons will help you conserve energy by only warming up the rooms that are currently in use. The rooms that aren’t in use can hover at a much lower temperature than the rooms you actually occupy. This will ensure that the furnace is only used where absolutely needed and waste is eliminated.
  • Eliminate Unwanted Temperature Changes: If you have temperature swings in your home from room to room, a zoning system can cure this issue. Rooms that need less heat can be turned down at their thermostat, and those that are excessively cold can get the boost they need to ensure total comfort. (more…)
