Beginning May 1, 2010 until May 31, 2011, residential rebates are available to Nicor Gas customers for purchases and installation of the following high efficiency products. Rebates as much as $400 on boilers, between $200 – $250 on furnaces.
The eligible products include high efficiency water heaters, furnaces, and gas boilers. These products must be installed by a professional heating & cooling contractor. Your purchase must be made between May 1, 2010, and May 31, 2011. Your application must be received by Nicor, and be postmarked no later than 60 days after purchase. Unlike, some other tax credits or rebates, this one is available to landlords.
This is a great time to capitalize on the Nicor rebate if you are a Nicor customer because you can also take advantage of manufacturer discounts and the federal tax credit on energy efficient products like furnaces, air conditioners and boilers. A reminder, purchase and installation of attic insulation also qualifies for a tax credit of up to $1,500.00.

If you need expert advice, why not call an expert?? If you’re like a lot of homeowners in the Chicago area, you have problems. Lots of them. We’re talking about problems with your home that have stumped the local heating and cooling guys and frustrated you and your family for quite some time. We know it’s true because we see it everyday.
Everyday people ask us to give them advice about their air conditioning system, or they may need a second opinion about a heating repair that’s been recommended. Sometimes they have troublesome humidity problems in their home; air quality issues, carbon monoxide fears or more.
Usually they’ve already had a diagnosis, but they just don’t understand it. Or perhaps they don’t trust it. We’ve found that most people simply want an honest opinion, instead of a sales pitch.
Well that’s why we’re here, and that’s why we’re writing this – If you need a TRUE expert to tell you what’s really happening in your home, or you have a problem that up until now, can’t be fixed—call us. We can help. We charge an honest rate for expert advice, and we’ll never make you uncomfortable with a high-pressure sales pitch.

How do you size your hvac system? When sizing a heating and cooling system for a home, a load calculation is the best and only system recognized by city codes. Yes, you’ve probably heard it all before, but a poorly sized HVAC system can lead not only rob you of your comfort by providing insufficient heating or cooling but also be costly in terms of higher energy bills.
Most HVAC contractors only size your system based on your old furnace & A/C size. The problem is that the new system is more efficient then your old system. For example: your old furnace is 60% efficient (afue) and has a 150,000 btu input. That means 40% of the natural gas or propane your furnace is using is going up the flue pipe into your chimney. Also your btu output of your furnace would be 90,000 btu’s (150,000 minus 40%). So if the contractor replaces your old furnace with the same size new furnace (new furnaces range from 80% to 95% efficiency) a 150,000 btu furnace at 80% efficiency would give you an output of 120,000 btu’s, which would give you 30,000 more btu’s then you have with your old furnace. Air conditioning repairs can be expensive. They’re also very common on heating & cooling systems that aren’t maintained properly. When it comes to home maintenance you have to consider your cooling system much like any other area of your home. You can ignore a problem, cross your fingers or you can take action. Postponing a repair may lead to further damage of your system or possibly going without home cooling for some time. What you have to ask yourself is would you rather pay for a nice vacation, or a new compressor? (more…)

Essentially, there is free money out there for those seeking to purchase a new high efficiency heating & cooling system such as a new furnace or new central air conditioner. Once the program runs out of money, you are out of luck. Make sure you use an HVAC company that is participating in the program or you won’t qualify for the rebate. Most rebates are taken off price when purchased, so you don’t have to wait for a check in the mail. The contractor is reimbursed by the State Rebate Program and is responsible for filing the necessary paperwork.
So if your thinking about buying a furnace or air conditioner, don’t delay, with all the incentives you won’t get a better price on high efficiency equipment. If you were to buy a high efficiency air conditioner & furnace you would get $350 for the furnace and $500 for the A/C from the state of Illinois and $1500 tax credit from the federal government. Plus most heating & cooling contractors are running specials this time of year due to the mid weather. But remember this is the calm before the storm, most Illinois and Chicago residents know we do not experience 2 mild summers in a row. (more…)

From FOUR SEASONS HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING – CHICAGO.
How does a furnace work? The heating cycle begins as soon as the thermostat determines that the temperature in the room is below the setpoint at which the consumer has set on the thermostat.
***(As a side note, a programmable thermostat can save you a great deal of money in the long run as you can easily program the thermostat with a lower setpoint for all the hours that you know you will not be home. Why keep the house any warmer than you need to when no one is there? If you know that you usually arrive home from work at 6:00pm, for example, you can program the thermostat to warm your house up for you starting at 5:30 rather than keeping the house unnecessarily warm all day long). With the economic tax credits that started approximately 18 months ago, the demand for new high efficiency furnaces has increased. There is a shortage of qualified installers and service people in our industry. Be sure that you purchase your new furnace or air conditioner from a licensed and certified heating and cooling installer. Today’s high efficiency furnaces and air conditioners require proper installation from a certified tech that has received hours of training. If you look around for a qualified heating contractor you can find one in your town that is certified. A furnace that is not properly installed will cost you more to operate and have frequent break-downs. Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning only employs factory trained techs that install all of our equipment to the manufacturer’s specs and requirements. In today’s tough economy be sure that you do the homework on who you are having install your furnace. The equipment is just as important as who installs it for you.

If you are not familiar with the transition to R410-A from R-22 as a refrigerant used in air conditioners familiarize yourself by reading this articel. Since December 31, 2009 the Federal Government and EPA have required all air conditioning manufacturers to cease making air conditioners with R-22 refrigerant in them. The impact of R-22 refrigerant on the environment has caused them to ban the units made with R-22. You can still purchase R-22 for your existing AC and it will be available for many years to come. So don’t worry if you have an R-22 AC unit; you will be just fine. It will however be a lot more expensive to charge the air conditioning system with R-22 because just like R-12 which is used in cars the price has gone through the roof. The price of R-22 is up approximately 300% and will keep going up. (more…)
