As January inches closer and closer to its close, many of us are beginning to realize that this winter is not going to be as fierce as expected. We haven’t had to rely on the furnace as much as we have in recent years, and the decreased demand for heat has driven down the price of natural gas. The savings have begun to roll in and now all of this money that was to be allocated for heating and home is sitting around in need of use. Every day, without fail, we have at least one customer call in asking us why their thermostat is flashing “filter.” They usually go on to explain that they checked the filter and the filter was clean but that the thermostat is still insisting that it needs to be changed. Luckily this is just a misconception about the capabilities of the thermostat, and Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning is here to help clear things up.
Reminding You to Check the Filter
Your thermostat is simply an on and off switch for your furnace and air conditioner. It senses the temperature in the home and turns the systems on and off in response to the temperature that you have set. Beyond that, the typical thermostat has little communication with the air conditioner and furnace. When the word “filter” shows up on your thermostat it isn’t actually detecting the dirt on your filter. It is simply a reminder to check it. The thermostat is reacting to the number of hours that the system has been running and not the actual filter itself. (more…)

Unfortunately, winter is right around the corner, and within a matter of a couple months, we will be turning on our furnaces. Are you having trouble with that ancient thermostat? Are you still messing around with an old dial unit or a first generation digital unit that just won’t turn on the air conditioner no matter what you press or turn? Well, if this sounds like you, you are not alone. Every year we send our technicians into homes to deal with thermostat issues, and many times the homeowners have trouble converting to the latest and greatest in thermostat technology. However, if you are one of these homeowner that has a thermostat that is physically wired to the furnace and air conditioner, you may want to reconsider your decision to stay stuck in the past.
A Difficult and Costly Repair
Wired thermostats use a wire that travels through the walls and floors of your home to communicate with the HVAC system. The only problem with this setup is caused when the old wire goes bad. Take a moment to consider your thermostat. Odds are it is nowhere near your furnace, and replacing that wire will mean creating access holes throughout the home to feed in a new wire. This is a time consuming and potentially costly repair! So, think about it. Do you really want to put more money into that old thermostat than it is actually worth? Probably not. (more…)

Older homes are typically in much greater need of an energy audit when compared to newer homes. Newer homes were often built for energy efficiency. The builders most likely placed adequate amounts of insulation within the walls, ceilings, and floors and the building techniques that they used created a virtually air tight home.
