Old Houses Need Energy Audits| South Holland, Hometown, Justice

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Have you noticed all of the talk about professional home energy audits? It seems like everyone from the power company to the government are telling us to go out and have our homes audited, but who really needs this service performed? Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning offers the citizens of Chicagoland this valuable service, but there are defiantly some people that need to have it done more than others.

The Difference between Old and New Homes

Older homes are typically in much greater need of an energy audit when compared to newer homes. Newer homes were often built for energy efficiency. The builders most likely placed adequate amounts of insulation within the walls, ceilings, and floors and the building techniques that they used created a virtually air tight home. However, if you home was built poorly or with cheap windows, doors, and HVAC appliances you could face the same problems that older homes do. (more…)

When Do I Change My Filter? | Midlothian, Lisle, Justice

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

One of the most frequently asked questions in the HVAC industry is, “How often should I change my furnace filter?” Unfortunately, there isn’t one straightforward answer that we can give you because there are several factors that play a role in the condition of the filter. Obviously, the first step would be to check the packaging on the filter itself. Usually it will have a recommended length of time after which replacement will be needed. However, here at Four Seasons, we don’t want you to suffer the consequences that come from having a dirty filter, so we recommend that you check the filter monthly. If it is dirty, replace it. If not, wait another month and check again. But, some families should be checking their filters more frequently. These are people who have:

  • Pets- pet hair quickly clogs furnace filters
  • Several people living in the home- the more people in the home, the more dust and debris that will be floating in the air
  • Recent construction in the home- Dust and debris from drywall and other construction materials will cause the filter to need to be changed more frequently (more…)

What is Choking Your Furnace and Your Savings? | Brookfield, Berwyn

Friday, November 19th, 2010

With the tax credits and extreme discounts that have been offered this past year on new high efficiency heating and cooling systems, many people have replaced their old systems in hopes of experiencing all the benefits that come from installing a new high efficiency furnace or air conditioner. The only problem is that many of these people are overlooking a very important component of the HVAC system that could be damaging and reducing the efficiency of their new systems. Which component could be doing this? The duct work! Poorly designed, improperly installed, and unbalanced duct work systems can cause major problems to your heating and cooling systems and to your comfort this upcoming winter.

Common Duct work Problems

  • Poorly Designed System: The goal of the duct work system is to get conditioned air to the rooms of your home and draw unconditioned air back to the furnace or air conditioner to be warmed or cooled. In order to do this effectively, the system needs to be designed efficiently. The number of bends and the length of duct work runs need to be kept at a minimum. The longer it takes for the air to reach its target location, the more restriction there will be upon airflow. (more…)

Friday, November 5th, 2010

When researching Four Seasons, you will find a lot about how Four Seasons hires NATE certified technicians. Unless you work in the HVAC industry, you probably don’t know exactly what being “NATE” certified really means. However, finding a company that employs this level of technician is very extremely important if you want to have your furnace repaired correctly this winter.

Top 5 Mistakes Made when Scheduling a Furnace Tune- Up| Riverdale

Monday, November 1st, 2010

They show up on your doorstep, in your mail, and in the sales papers. They are coupons for a furnace cleaning, and the prices range from $40 to well over $100. But what makes one cleaning different from another? Why the huge difference in price? How do you pick just one? These are all common questions that may cross your mind when searching for a company to perform this vital service on your furnace. Unfortunately, many people make mistakes when scheduling these appointments that often lead to them getting ripped off by illegitimate companies. To prevent this from happening to you, this is a list of 5 mistakes that we commonly hear about at Four Seasons.

Mistake #1

Choosing a company based on the price that they advertise

Everyone is looking for a good price these days, and they often don’t take into consideration whether or not a service can actually be performed properly at such a low cost. Some of us may even jump to the conclusion that the company who is charging more is the one who is trying to scam you instead of the low priced company. That is the trick that the illegitimate companies want you to fall for. (more…)

Early Summer Still A Good Time to Get A/C Tune Up

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

When you take steps to make your central air conditioning effective and efficient, you can realize monthly savings on your energy bills. I would recommend you tune-up your system in the spring but even early summer is a good time to get your A/C Tune Up.

Keep your cooling system running at peak performance by having your contractor perform an annual tune-up on your central air conditioning unit. Think of an air conditioning tune up not only as maintenance but also insurance that your system will continue to run well down the line because the inspection will reveal any potential issues . HVAC for Beginners- How A Furnace Works| Lynwood, Glenwood

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

How does a furnace work? The heating cycle begins as soon as the thermostat determines that the temperature in the room is below the setpoint at which the homeowner had placed on the thermostat.

***(As a side note, a programmable thermostat can save you a great deal of money in the long run as you can easily program the thermostat with a lower setpoint for all the hours that you know you will not be home. Why keep the house any warmer than you need to when no one is there? If you know that you usually arrive home from work at 6:00pm, for example, you can program the thermostat to warm your house up for you starting at 5:30 rather than keeping the house unnecessarily warm all day long). Extend the Life of Your Furnace Lockport, Harvey, and Darien!

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Plain and simple, regular maintenance performed correctly extends the life of mechanical equipment and helps avoid needless and costly furnace repair. Every consumer understands this when it comes to getting the oil changed on their vehicles, but it is amazing how many people don’t think that it is necessary to maintain their HVAC system.

You can trace almost any problem you might experience with your HVAC system back to a lack of maintenance. To illustrate, imagine that you have just learned that the heat exchanger on your furnace has failed and as a result there is poisonous carbon monoxide gas leaking into your home. Obviously, you are left with no choice. An expensive repair or replacement must be performed immediately. (more…)
