Going to be away from home for a while? Follow these tips before you go

If you are leaving on an extended vacation during the winter or will otherwise be away from your home for a few weeks to a month, here are some helpful tips that will save you lots of grief and protect your home from cold related issues.

  1. Turn off your water main inside of the home.  It is usually located in the basement toward the front of your home.
  2. Shut the gas cock off on the water heater gas line.  (Be sure not to shut the gas off to the furnace.)
  3. Drain your water heater of all water.
  4. Turn all of your indoor faucets on and drain the water.
  5. Flush all toilets.  You can use a wet vac to remove the remaining water in the tank.

You may find these tips helpful if you are going on an extended vacation or will otherwise be away from your home for a long period of time this winter. Always better to be safe than sorry!

  1. Pour 24oz. of propylene glycol into each drain in your home, which will include the shower, floor, sink, laundry drain, etc.

By following these steps you can prevent a disaster should there be a power outage while you are away or if your furnace should fail.  Be sure to leave your heat on a least 50° and have a family member, neighbor or friend check your home every 2 weeks.
