CRAIN'S Chicago Business - Largest Privately Held Companies 2010
April 29, 2010
The 2010 Crain's Chicago Business - List of the Largest Privately Held Companies was released on April, 19, 2010. Four Seasons Heating & Air Conditioning is ranked #261. Stimulus plans light fire under Four Seasons
Government Stimulus programs lately have boosted some companies' revenues. At Four Seasons Heating & Air Conditioning Inc., federal and state money has contributed to record sales. Four Seasons enjoyed a 30% rise in revenue last year to $78 million at a time when many rivals were struggling to stay afloat. Other companies have depended on new construction for much of their installation volume — a market that went comatose in 2009 — but Four Seasons has shunned new homes as low-margin work not worth the trouble.

Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning strives to give its customers
the best service possible.

Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning's name makes sense not only because the HVAC provider works year-round, but also because its roots come from a Chicago firefighter who wanted to keep busy all the time. Owner Dave Musial says his father, Ken, learned the trade while in the Navy in the 1960s and began offering his services as a way to fill the downtime he normally experienced. Even though his duties as a fireman kept him away from HVAC work for days at a time, Musial says his father's customers didn't mind waiting for their projects to be completed.

"A lot of people were willing to wait for my father because he was honest and trustworthy," Musial says. Those values have carried over into the next generation and have propelled Four Seasons into a position of prominence in the Chicago HVAC market. Musial says the priorities instilled in him by his father have made Four Seasons a trusted name Read More...

USA Today - Easy steps can cut winter heating bills
October 16, 2009
Four Seasons Heating & Air Conditioning owner Dave Musial was recently featured in a USA Today article about common home heating myths and ways to save energy at home while keeping heating bills low in winter. Here is an excerpt from the article...

Myth: Water-heater settings don't matter.

Reality: Crank your tank down.
Dave Musial of Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning in Chicago says 95% of the homes his installers visit have the water heater set too high. A setting of 120 degrees or "warm" provides comfortable hot water, according to the Department of Energy. You can save money by dressing your water heater for winter, too: A precut insulation jacket for your appliance costs less than $20, and it will pay for itself in no time, Musial says. Read More...

A Unique Partnership-S2K: The Common Denominator
Business owners dream: An unexpectedly high volume of business.
Humbling reality: An increased need for immediate access to materials.

Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning, the largest privately owned HVAC service provider in the U.S., found itself in this situation. As the company grew, it sought to enhance services to its over 75,000 customers. To accomplish this, Four Seasons required immediate access to thousands of parts. The company teamed with Sid Harvey's, an HVAC parts and equipment distributor. The two agreed to share an 80,000-sq.-ft. warehouse.

Prior to becoming strategic partners both Sid Harvey's and Four Seasons relied on VAI (Vormittage Associates, Inc.), a leading provider of enterprise management solutions to the HVAC industry, to provide and implement its award winning software. VAI helped these companies find a common denominator, forging a unique partnership in customer service. Read More...
Family Values
Chicago native Dave Musial's new approach to service is steeped in emphasizing traditional customer service.
Dave Musial is a regular guy. No one would suspect upon first meeting him that the mild mannered Chicagoan heads up a $60-million company.

As the president and chief executive officer of Four Seasons Heating & Air Conditioning, www.fourseasonsheating.com, you won't find Dave practicing his swing on the golf course, or taking extended vacations in the Caribbean, like other company leaders. In fact, you are likely to find Dave sipping a cup of steaming Dunkin' Donuts coffee, at his office in downtown Chicago, while he looks over service orders, and answers calls from customers.

"I'm a solutions guy. I don't hide in my office and wait for other people to handle customer service, it's just not my nature," said Musial, who puts in 14-hour days, seven days a week, and rarely takes a vacation.

Musial credits his father Ken, with giving him a strict work ethic. "My dad always believed in integrity, and that the quality of work should speak for itself, that is definitely reflected in our ethics statement today," said Musial, "it's something we live and die by." Read More...
CONTRACTOR/DISTRIBUTOR — PARTNERING BREAKS NEW GROUND
BY DAVE MUSIAL.

It all started with one man and one truck. My father was a professional firefighter in Chicago. Because they work 24-hour shifts, sleeping at the firehouse firefighters have a lot of extra time on their hands. Most find secondary sources of income. In 1971, my dad opened his own HVAC contracting business-one man with one truck.
I joined the company after high school and it became one man, one teenager, and one truck. When dad retired in 1995, it was back to one man (me), and one truck. But not for long.

Over the past 12 years, Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning has grown to a $60 million business that employs more than 400. At a certain point, this tremendous growth gave birth to the unique idea of having a distributor on site at our main facility, with the sole mission of supplying our business. Read More...
